The Mequinenza coal basin is located in Eastern Aragon and centered on Mequinenza. The basin covers areas in the provinces of Zaragoza, Huesca, and Lleida. Exploited since the mid-19th century, at times there were over 200 mines, with workers coming from nearby towns such as Fayón, Nonaspe, Caspe, the Baix Cinca region, or even Sástago.
In 2010, the Mine Museum was inaugurated with over 1,000 meters of indoor pathways, allowing visitors to observe the harsh lives of miners, their working conditions, and the different extraction and transport methods using rafts. The Royo Mine headframe, one of the few mines in this region with vertical shafts, is also preserved.
