Diesel-electric locomotive – RENFE 10.836

A total of forty-one units make up the diesel-electric locomotive series 10.800 of RENFE, based on the General Electric U10-B model, which has a wide range of variants making them very suitable for export. With small variations, they can incorporate a Clayton-type steam generator, which provides heating for passenger cars in winter. The first five were built by General Electric (G.E.) in the USA under license by Sociedad Española de Construcciones Babcock y Wilcox at their Galindo factory in Sestao, Bilbao, and by G.E.E., a subsidiary of GECo, at the Trápaga plant in Galindo, Bilbao.

With nearly 1,000 HP, this makes these medium-power machines, very balanced in weight (16 tons per axle) and consumption, an ideal model of mixed-use locomotive for all types of service, shunting, small freight trains, medium-distance mixed trains, and even double-heading express trains. It has also been widely used on the narrow-gauge railways of La Robla, which introduced it in 1963, and on the Tajuña railway, as well as in industrial iron and steel and port facilities in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, where it has been operating for over fifty years in the latter cases. Likewise, currently, Renfe units are part of private railway operators.

Until 2008, locomotive 10.836 was in operation at the Port of Tarragona, performing, among other tasks, the splitting of coal trains destined for the Andorra (Teruel) power plant. A year later, RENFE transferred it to the APPFI, and it was subsequently towed to Móra la Nova. Its condition was very poor, with missing parts, but it has undergone a major restoration that has returned it to operational status, and it currently runs regularly at our Museum.
